Buffalo Hide Versus Cowhide Which Makes the Better Leather Jacket
First thing to understand is that the Buffalo Hide we are referring to for Leather Jackets is not American Buffalo but Water Buffalo. Which is stronger Buffalo hide or Cowhide for making a jacket. Before processing the Buffalo hide is thicker than the Cowhide.
When a Leather Jacket is made the full thickness of the hide is not used. During processing the hide is split into several layers, top grain (the layer that had the hair on it) and other layers called split grain. Quality Leather Motorcycle Jackets usually contain leather with a thickness of 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm.
When hides are processed they are split to about the same thickness thus both are the Both are available in different thicknesses depending on quality and whether it is top grain or split grain. Therefore two comparible jackets one bing buffalo hide and one being cowhide will be the same thickness.
