The History Of Motorcycle Helmets
In the early days of motorcycling there wasn’t a big need for motorcycle helmet. There wasn’t allot of speed in early motorcycles but as they become more popular like anything else motorcyclists wanted more speed. Along with speed came more accidents and fatalities thus laws requiring helmets.
In 1953 a professor from the university of southern California designed the first helmet as Harley Davidson and Indian were manufacturing motorcycles with more speed. In 1958 California Highway Patrol officers began wearing helmets as an example hoping other riders would follow. In 1966 the Highway Safety Act was passed and this required motorcyclists to wear helmets. A provision of the law was that in order for states to receive funding for highways the requirement of the helmet law had to be instituted. 47 states had instituted the law by 1975 when the in the same year the law was repealed and fatality rates increased.
Studies have shown that head injuries are the number one cause of motorcycle fatalities. This is the reason that I as an avid motorcycle rider wear a Helmet as I have laid bikes down and have proof that helmets do help prevent head injuries. All motorcycle apparel such as a Black Leather Motorcycle Jacket
, chaps, leather gloves and a helmet all make the safety of the rider increase. As with anything these accessories won’t prevent all injuries but they will help. So happy motoring and ride safe!!!!!
